FALL CHICKEN BBQ / OPEN HOUSE & YARD SALE

The Summerdale Fire Company will hold a fall Chicken BBQ and Open House along with a town wide yard sale on October 2nd. The Chicken BBQ will run from 10:00 am until sold out with the open house running from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. The open house is open to everyone from the public and will contain fire prevention activities in conjunction with the 2010 national fire prevention week which is 10/3-10/9. JUNIOR MEMBER RECOGNIZED FOR SERVICE

8/25/10- The company is proud to announce that Junior Firefighter Dylan Owen has recently been recognized along with  several other East Pennsboro Township Fire Department Juniors to be featured in an article in the East Pennsboro Area School Districts Panther 2 Panther newsletter. CHAIN REACTION ON THE BRIDGE

8/19/10- At 15:05 hours, The engine was sent to assist Dauphin County company 37 (Rescue) with the auto accident on I81 North half way across the George Wade Bridge. Chief 5 (Bumgardner) arrived first to find a chain reaction crash with six vehicles including multiple empty school buses involved in the express lane. Engine 20 and Company 37 then arrived and quickly assessed all the vehicles to find one patient with minor injuries. As Engine 20 was leaving the scene, It was requested on the Perry 6-01 box (Marysville) for the auto accident with possible ejection.


TRAINING DRILL

8/17/10- For weekly training, Summerdale Volunteer's were tasked with a drill at a local wooded area. Crews were "dispatched" to a scene of a mock bicycle accident. Members arrived to find a patient "dummy" that was entangled in a bicycle located at the bottom of a hill in a brushy area. Crews immediately went to work with splitting crews with one setting up a haul system while the other crew assessed the patient, cut bicycle away from the patient using the Amkus O-Cutters and packaged the patient. Both crews then worked together getting the patient to the top of the hill where members critiqued the drill and went over different haul systems. Company 20 had 15 members present for the weekly Tuesday training.


ROLLOVER ON THE 96 BOX

8/7/10- Around noon today, The 20-96 box was sent to the Interstate for the auto accident with one overturned. Engine 20 (Lt. Stilo Sr.) arrived to find one vehicle over the guard rail and down the embankment with the occupant already out. The box was then held to company 20, Rescue 18 and Ems. Crews assisted Ems with patient packaging, secured the vehicle and assisted the towing company with the recovery of the vehicle.


ONE INTO THE HOUSE WITH FIRE

8/2/10- At 13:07 hours, The first alarm was dropped on the 30-101 box for the auto accident with a vehicle into a house with fire sending the Engine and Tanker. Chief 21 (Bender) arrived on the scene to find a working pickup truck fire with the occupant out. Company 20 arrived and established a water supply to the scene while the crew assisted crews with extinguishing the fire and checking for other hazards.


TWO EARN FIREFIGHTER 1 CERTIFICATION

7/31/10- Congratulations to Assistant Chief Josh Matter and Firefighter Ty Matter on earning their Firefighter 1 certification.

7/29/10- Congratulations to Probationary Firefighters Glen Eichelberger and Josh Ozio on the successful completion of their interior firefighter class.


FOAM ASSIST TO REED TOWNSHIP

7/27/10- At 07:34 hours, Company 20 was requested to Route 322 in Reed Township, Dauphin County to assist on the auto accident with rollover and a hazmat. Tanker, Brush and Foam Wagon 20 responded and arrived to find crews working on containing a major fuel leak from an overturned fuel tanker. Crews immediately went to work setting up for full foam operations. Company 20 with the help of other companies stood by with foam lines in place while hazmat and clean up crews contained the leak and started the clean up and transfer process. Crews applied a foam blanket and continued flow during the roll over process of the tanker. The remaining fuel was transferred to another tanker and crews were able to clean up most of the leaked product without any major problems. Tanker 20 and its crew assisted with water supply during the event. Company 20 returned to Summerdale about six hours later. A special thank you to North Middleton Township Fire Department for covering the 20 district with Engine 239 during the incident.


AND YET ANOTHER CONFINEMENT

7/26/10- Around 12:30 hours, the 30-98 box was struck for an Auto Accident with a vehicle over-turned with entrapment. Lieutenant 1-30 (McBride) arrived first to find two vehicles involved with one confined and one vehicle partially on its side. Engine 20 (Stilo Jr.) arrived and assisted Company 30 with stabilization and extrication of the patient.


FIRE PREVENTION TO THE DAY CAMP

7/21/10- The daylight crew took the Tanker and Brush to the Summerdale Centennial Community Park for a fire prevention detail. During the summer, kids from around the Summerdale area gather there as a "Day Camp". The kids have various activities throughout the summer and one of them is fire prevention. Crews talked to the kids about some various fire prevention ideas and also let them play with the hose for a little bit and showed them around the apparatus.


ANOTHER CONFINEMENT

7/16/10- Around 15:30 hours, the 20-96 box was sent for an Auto Accident with multiple vehicles overturned. Chief 5 (Bumgardner) arrived first to find to vehicles both up right with one patient confined. Engine 20 (FF Brougher) arrived next and started extrication. Rescue 18 (FF Owen) and Tanker 20 (Lt Stilo) arrived and assisted Engine 20's crew. Tanker 19 (DC Stone) assisted EMS with the other vehicle. 


ADDITION TO THE FAMILY

7/15/10- Congratulations to Assistant Chief Matter and his wife Leslie on giving birth to their daughter last night. Breeann Lee Matter was born 7/14/10 at 23:02 hours, she was 4lb's, 2.5oz's and 19 inches. Mom and child are both doing great at Holy Spirit Hospital.


CONFINEMENT ON THE BRIDGE

7/15/10- Around 05:00 hours, the 20-96 box was sent for an Auto Accident with unknown injuries in the area of Exit 65. Chief 5 (Bumgardner) arrived on the scene first to find three cars involved with one patient confined. Engine 20 (AC Laman) arrived next and began the extrication process. Tanker 20 (Lt Stilo) arrived shortly after and assisted the Engine's crew with extrication operations. Life Lion was then requested for the patient. Brush 20 (FF Owen) and Engine 1-30 (Rausch) handled the landing zone at the local Penndot shed.


2010 INDEPENDENCE DAY

7/4/10- The members of the Summerdale Fire Company would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday! Please remember the real reason for the holiday and keep our soldiers who are putting their own lives in danger every day in your thoughts. We would also like to remind everyone that this holiday weekend can always be a dangerous one due to the use of fireworks. THIRD ANNUAL CARNIVAL A SUCCESS

6/26/10- Once again, The annual East Pennsboro Emergency Services Carnival held from June 21st through the 26th was a huge success. Members would like to thank all of those who volunteered, sponsored and participated during this years event! Without the volunteers from the community this event would not be able to happen each year. Once again, Thank you all for your support! FOUR TROPHIES IN ONE WEEK

6/16/10- Tonight the Tanker and Brush traveled to Liverpool for their annual fireman's carnival and parade. The end of the night the both rigs brought home a trophy, Best Appearing Tanker and Best Appearing Brush. On Saturday June 15th, the Tanker traveled to Wiconisco for the Dauphin County Convention. The tanker ended up winning two categories, 1st place out of county Tanker and Best Appearing non-red fire truck.


CRASH WITH FIRE

6/13/10- Around 20:53 hours, Engine 20 was dispatched to assist Dauphin County Company 37 with a crash involving fire on the GWB. Chief 5 (Bumgardner) arrived first to find one vehicle and a tractor trailer involved with the car on fire blocking the all lanes of the interstate. Engine 20 (Laman) arrived and started fire attack while Company 37 handled the patients involved. 


GREASE FIRE IN THE 1 DISTRICT

6/13/10- Around 08:30 hours, EPFD was sent to Dairy Queen for a grease fire. Chief 5 (Bumgardner) went en-route and was advised that Police Department was on the scene for a burglar alarm and could see a fire in the fryer. Engine 20 arrived first and had to force entry and extinguished the fire with a dry chem. Crews ventilated the building and secured the gas and went available.


BASIC VEHICLE RESCUE TECHNICIAN

6/5/10- Today members from the EPFD and North Middleton finished up the Basic Vehicle Rescue series by finishing the Technician level. Crews traveled to HACC for the practical part of the class and cut cars apart many different ways all day. Thank you to instructors John Fogg and Floyd Wise for making this whole series possible.


WRECK IN THE STATION 1 DISTRICT

5/30/10- Around 17:42 hours, Engine 20 and Rescue 18 were dispatched to the area of the High School for an Auto Accident with unknown injuries. Chief 1-20 (Laman) arrived first to find one vehicle that struck a house and ended up in a yard. Engine 20 (AC Matter) and Rescue 18 (Owen) arrived at the same time and started hazard control, stabilization and extrication of the patient.  


WRECK IN THE 5 BOX

5/27/10- At 21:22 hours, the 20-05 box was sent for an Auto Accident with unknown injuries. Chief 1-20 (Laman) arrived on the scene to find one vehicle with 2 patients. Upon the arrival of Chief 5B (Rudeck), Chief 1-20 (Laman) took operations and Chief 5B (Rudeck) took Command. Engine 20 (AC Matter) arrived and started patient care and vehicle stabilization. Tanker 20 (Lt. Stilo Sr.) arrived and assisted the Engine's crew. Rescue 18 was then later diverted to the Landing Zone. 


KITCHEN FIRE IN THE 19-2 BOX

5/24/10- Around 11:00 the Engine Company was dispatched to transfer to Station 31 while they operated at a house fire, while en route to that the 19-2 box was sent for smoke from an attic, the Engine diverted to that call instead. Chief 1-19 (Bartolo) arrived seconds before the Engine confirming a working fire. Engine 20 (Lt. Stilo Sr.) arrived as the first in unit and tagged a nearby hydrant, laying in to the front of the structure. The Engine crew made entry to find a kitchen fire spreading quickly to the attic area. Units remained on scene for awhile doing some overhaul and salvage operations before returning.


HOUSE OFF IN SOUTH ENOLA

5/17/10- At 20:23 hours, EPFD was dispatched to the area of Creekside Drive and South Enola Drive for a house fire. Chief's 16 (Fair) and 5A (Owen) arrived to find a three story single family with fire from the delta side of the house. Engine 20 arrived as the second unit and sent manpower forward and started fire attack and ventilation. 2nd alarm was shortly dispatched for more manpower bringing in Tanker 20. The Tanker supplied Truck 17 from the hydrant at Dennis Drive and Creekside Drive. Units operated on the scene for awhile conducting overhaul operations and also assisting the Fire Marshal. Many thanks to Duncannon and Silver Spring for covering our station during this event.


TANKER ROLL-OVER SIMULATOR

5/16/10- Today members from the Foam Taskforce and Company 39 (North Middleton) attended an 8 hour long class held by Weavertown Environmental Group. The class was about tanker roll-overs, after some classroom material was covered the members headed out to the County training grounds for some "hands on" training. Crews reviewed some techniques on foam applications.


THREE MORE EARN FF1 CERTIFICATION

5/1/10- Congratulations to Firefighter's Dexter Owen, Robert Wagner and Steve Stilo Jr. on completing the requirements for Firefighter 1.


HAZMAT DRILL

4/27/10- For the regular Tuesday evening training, Members performed a run in hazardous materials incident with a patient. Company 20 had 18 members participate in the drill.


CHICKEN BBQ & BREAKFAST

4/24/10- Today the Company held its annual Chicken BBQ and Breakfast while the village had its town wide yard sale. We cooked 650 half's and started serving our chicken dinners by 10:00 and we were all sold out by 12:30. Special thanks to the members who helped out from Citizens Fire Company. Thank you to all who supported us on this day!


BASIC VEHICLE RESCUE OPERATIONS

4/10/10- Members from the EPFD, EPAS and a few members from North Middleton finished up Basic Vehicle Rescue Operations today. Members learned a lot the last couple of days both in the classroom and in the junk yard doing the "hands on" techniques. A big thanks to John Fogg and Floyd Wise for teaching the class, and also to Woody's for getting us the cars and letting us use their junkyard.


TREE FIRE NEXT TO A HOUSE

3/24/10- At 06:36 hours, Engine and Tanker 20 was dispatched to assist Hampden on a first alarm assignment for a tree fire next to a townhouse. Chief 1-30 (Ozog) arrived first to find and working tree and brush fire next to a house with the siding melting. Engine 20 arrived and staged at the hydrant at Regiment Blvd. and Brigade Drive. Engine and Tanker sent there manpower forward to assist with checking for extension in the house.


WORKING MOBILE HOME FIRE IN HAMPDEN

3/22/10- At 23:39 hours, Engine 20 was dispatched to assist Hampden on a mobile home fire. Chief 2-31 (Henderson) arrived first to find a well involved mobile home fire. Engine 20 arrived and assisted with fire attack and water supply operations. Crews remained on the scene and assisted with overhaul operations before returning.


GARAGE FIRE IN DAUPHIN

3/15/10- Around 11:09 hours, The Engine and Tanker were dispatched to assist Dauphin Company 38 on a local box for a commercial garage fire. While units were en-route Engine 38 arrived to find a well involved garage and upgraded the box to a first alarm. Tanker 20 arrived as the third apparatus and the first tanker, the Tanker was advised to supply Engine 38. Engine 20 then arrived and took over the Tanker's job and once Engine 38 got a supply from the dumpsite, the Engine then supplied Truck 35. Crews remained on the scene assisting dauphin companies with extensive overhaul once the fire was knocked down. 


CHIMNEY FIRE IN THE FIRST DUE

3/12/10- At 07:11 hours, The box was sent to the 20-05 box for the chimney fire. Chiefs 5 and 5A arrived to find a working chimney fire. Engine 20 arrived as first due and took the scene sending the crew to the roof and interior to extinguish the fire. Crews were able to extinguish the fire without any extension to the interior of the house.


FOAM WAGON ASSISTS HAMPDEN

3/6/10- Around 23:43 hours, Hampden was sent to Carlisle Carrier on Brackville Blvd. for a tractor trailer fire. Lieutenant 3-30 (Flinn III) arrived first to find 2 tractors well involved and impinging on another. The foam wagon was then requested to assist due to having some flammable liquid issues. The foam wagon arrived and assisted Hampden with over-haul operations before returning.


FOAM TEAM ACTIVATION

2/12/10- Around 06:00 hours, Cumberland County Communications dispatched Foam 200 (Companies 20 & 45) to assist Franklin County Company 11 (Pleasant Hall) with a building fire on the Letterkenny Army Depot. The Brush and the Foam Wagon made it out and met up with Company 45 and then deployed to the scene to assist.


HOUSE FIRE IN THE 19-04 BOX

2/10/10- At 21:36 hours, EPFD and Camp Hill units were dispatched to a House Fire on County Club Place West. Chief 1-75 (Bowers) arrived first to find normal conditions from the outside with the resident reporting a fire in the wall around the chimney. Engine 20 was on the street within a matter of moments due to the crew staffing the station for the snow storm and arrived right behind Company 19. Tanker 20 was requested due to possibly having some problems locating hydrants. Lieutenant 20 (Stilo Sr.) took interior operations while the Engine and Tanker crews worked in opening up and extinguishing the fire.


SNOW BLIZZARD STANDBY

2/9/10- During the snow storm this week the station was staffed and bunkroom was full and then plus some. During that time the crew on station besides running calls cooked some good meals and also spent a couple hours shoveling hydrants out around the district. Reminder to residents please try and keep your hydrant clear of snow.


COTTAGE FIRE IN PERRY

1/29/10 -At 06:48 hours, Engine company 20 and 18 was hit to assist Perry County Company 6 (Marysville) with a house fire in the borough. While en route, Perry Chief 6-2 (Hetherington) arrived to find a small riverside cottage with a working fire. Tanker 20 was then requested to the scene due to the location of the cottage. Company 20 arrived to find Company 6 out with a small fire in the floor area of the cottage. Crews assisted with extinguishment and overhaul before returning.


AUTO ACCIDENT AT THE LIGHT

1/11/10- At 18:48 hours, Companies 20 & 18 were dispatched for an Auto Accident at N. Enola Road and Valley Road. Chief 2-20 (Matter) arrived to find two vehicles involved with two injuries. Crews started patient care and stabilized both vehicles and cleaned up the debris.


2009 FINAL REPORT

1/9/10- In the year of 2009 company 20 responded to 264 incidents. The company had 50 personnel who responded throughout the year. Unit responses were Engine 20 with 178, Tanker 20 with 65, Brush 20 with 33 and the Utility with 8. The top five responders were:

Engineer Jim Bumgardner- 244, Firefighter Bill Brougher Sr.- 233, Firefighter Steve Stilo Sr.- 193, Firefighter Dexter Owen- 168 and Firefighter Josh Matter- 161.


AUTO ACCIDENT VEHICLE OVERTURNED

1/6/10- At 18:18 hours, Dauphin box 84-11 was struck for an Auto Accident with a vehicle overturned. Engine 20 arrived to find one vehicle over-turned with the patients self-extricated and debris on the roadway. The Engine crew started patient care and stabilized both cars before returning.
